Izaak Eliasberg, Janusz Korczak (Henryk Goldszmit) and Stefania Wilczyńska with children from the Dom Sierot (Orphans' Home)
Collection | Muzeum Warszawy |
Description | The photo shows a group of girls from the Dom Sierot (Orphans' Home) with their guardians: the president of the "Aid for Orphans" Society, running the center, dr. Izaak Eliasberg (in the center from the left), director Janusz Korczak (Henryk Goldszmit) and the main tutor Stefania Wilczyńska. The photo was most likely taken in the Warsaw branch of the Dom Sierot (Orphans' Home), "Różyczka" - also commonly known as Gocławek - where the children were spending their summer vacations. This is indicated by the comparison of the visible details of the background with the preserved architectural plans of one of the buildings. Previously, it was mistakenly believed that the photo was taken in the main Warsaw seat of the Dom Sierot (Orphans' Home). The Aid for Orphans Society looked after the poorest Jewish children. When the idea of organizing their own modern educational institution was born, they managed to buy a property "behind the Wola tollgates" on 92 Krochmalna Street, thanks to the efforts of many of its members. Later, a specially designed building was erected there - a dream house, into which the first children moved in in October 1912. The branch in Wawer operated from 1921.
