| Description | This book provides insight into the workings of the care home called Nasz Dom. It describes its pedagogical methods, designed to stimulate children's development and ensure they have influence over decisions made about the institution is run. The book is constructed in a way which relates to Janusza Korczak's earlier work "Jak kochać dziecko. Dom Sierot". Maria Rogowska-Falska's book contains quotes from Korczak's publication. Our Home worked similarly to the Orphanage. This allows a very probable reconstruction of the institution managed by Korczak in ways which have not been otherwise documented (records were almost completely destroyed during the war). Both institutions were managed with the conviction that children should be treated with respect and allowed to participate in civic life. This approach to children was touched upon in the introduction Korczak produced for this publication. The author of the book was a director of Nasz Dom between 1919-1944, when it housed Polish children. She met Korczak in Kiev in 1915 when, during a period of leave from military service, he visited the boarding school she managed. Korczak co-managed Nasz Dom between 1919-1935. He resigned from this post in circumstances which have never been successfully explained. |
