Prawidła życia : pedagogika dla młodzieży i dorosłych

Collection Biblioteka Narodowa
Description Aimed at children and young people, this publication is an attempt to explain the world around them. The themes it deals with include: gender differences, emotional maturation, social relations, social and material differences, self-development and so on. The choice of themes under discussion was not accidental – some of the most pressing themes were suggested to Korczak by children themselves. Their submissions to the youth magazine „Mały Przegląd” which Korczak established and edited between 1926-1930 (edited between 1930-1939 by Jerzy Abramow, who then took on the name Igor Newerly), inspired the choice of themes. The book is made up of short chapters adjusted in terms of language to meet the needs of young readers and includes lexis which comes from youthful speech patterns of the time. Each chapter ends with a conclusion relating to the themes in question, in the style of a folk tale. The book ends with „Trzy dodatki do tej książki”. This part contains Korczak's thoughts on writing the book, poetry, philosophy and the language used by children. One of the motivations for writing "Prawidła życia" was Korczak's conviction that children and young people need adults to help them understand the world, and it is the responsibility of adults to support them in this undertaking. The book was published in 1929 (dated 1930). According to one of the sources, it was reissued in 1933, yet this is not confirmed. The book was well reviewed, but Korczak was not satisfied with the way it was received by readers. It is possible this led to him deciding not to publish part two of this work, something he had previously announced he would do.
