Business card of Janusz Korczak (Henryk Goldszmit)
Collection | Muzeum Warszawy |
Description | This ordinary business card with a handwritten note by Janusz Korczak (Henryk Goldszmit) saying “I wanted to send it a long time, but I didn't know the address. Greetings "is one of the few personal "documents" that survived after him. Most of the writer's paper materials (manuscripts, personal documents, correspondence) were burned down during World War II. We do not know to whom the business card was addressed. Written in a sweeping handwriting, probably sent with the book, it remains a mystery - it is a precious shard from the past. It is noteworthy that the doctor's family name and surname are displayed on the card from 1938, although at that time hardly anyone outside the circle of close friends knew that "Janusz Korczak" was a literary pseudonym. Henryk Goldszmit made his debut in the Warsaw press in 1896, while still a student of a male gymnasium in Praga. He did not write under his own name, because the tsarist school students could not officially write and publish in newspapers. Initially, he used many code names and pseudonyms: Hen., Ryk., Janasz Korczak, Janusz, G. and Hagot. With time, from the beginning of 1900, the compilation "Janusz Korczak" became the writer's main nickname (he even signed private letters with it).
