'Orchestra' under the 'baton' of Dr. J. Korczak

Collection Muzeum Warszawy
Description In the "orchestra" under the "baton" of Janusz Korczak (Henryk Goldszmit), immortalized against the background of the Dom Sierot (Orphans' Home) at 92 Krochmalna Street, apart from Kroczak there were the following performers: Lejzor Rybazen on the mandolin, Stasiek (Szulim / Stanisław / Stanley), Dembiński on the accordion, Felek (Fajwel) Grzyb on the harmonica, and Icek Sandomirski [Sandomir?] and Chil Dolina on the violins. The "baton" held by the doctor is actually a simple trumpet or pipe. This is probably the only preserved photo in which the teacher and writer was captured in a free, joyful scene, although this is what many pupils remembered in his relationship with children: cheerful, prone to joking, smiling. The signature visible in the photograph - "Orchestra" under the "baton" of Dr. J. Korczak "- was crossed out by the writer. It is not known whether Korczak could play an instrument, but at the Dom Sierot (Orphans' Home), great importance was attached to the musical education of the pupils. There was a piano in the main auditorium, children played in a mandolin ensemble, sang in several choirs, dance classes were conducted, and gramophone records were listened to. The most talented pupils had additional music lessons.
