Collection | Muzeum Warszawy |
Description | The photo shows a group of children in front of the side entrance to Nasz Dom (Our Home) in Bielany. The Educational Centre "Nasz Dom" (Our Home) was an educational institution for Polish working-class children, organized by the members of left-wing trade unions. It began operating on autumn 1919. It worked in accordance to the assumptions and practice of the Dom Sierot (Orphans' Home), which had been operating for seven years, under the direction of Janusz Korczak (Henryk Goldszmit). The co-founder of Nasz Dom (Our Home) was Maria Falska, who managed the institution from its inception. Initially, Nasz Dom (Our Home) was located in Pruszków, in a rented building on Cedrowa 12 Street. From 1921, the institution was run by the "Nasz Dom" (‘Our Home’) Society, joined by Aleksandra Piłsudska in the mid-1920s. Thanks to her protection, it was possible to build its own, modern building at Pola Bielańskie, then still outside Warsaw. The institution moved there in 1928.
