Description | The photo shows a group of children from the Dom Sierot (Orphans' Home) in front of the main headquarters on 92 Krochmalna Street. In 1932, Erna Schehndorfówna (1910–2003), a student of Polish studies at the University of Jan Kazimierz in Lviv came to Dom Sierot (Orphans’ Home). Fascinated by the figure of Janusz Korczak (Henryk Goldszmit), having found an advertisement about the boarding house at the Dom Sierot (Orphans' Home) in a local daily newspaper, she sent an application. When she was accepted, she moved to Warsaw (she continued her studies at the University of Warsaw). Two months after entering a new life path her article appeared in "Głos Kobiet", a supplement to the Lviv newspaper "Chwila". In it she described her impressions from her stay at the Dom Sierot (Orphans' Home) in Warsaw: “The Dom Sierot (Orphans' Home) is a beautiful two-story house, where everything from the bedrooms and recreation room to kitchen and laundry facilities is designed to meet all hygiene requirements. One hundred children live here, one hundred citizens of society with a strong and resilient organization, they work, play and learn under the supervision of Ms Stefa Wilczyńska and a number of educators. The task of educators at the Dom Sierot (Orphans' Home) is to watch over the child's freedom so that everyone has the opportunity to develop their individuality within the limits that ensure the safety of everyone in the group ”.
