Maria Falska with the Local Council of Nasz Dom (Our Home)

Collection Muzeum Warszawy
Description The photo shows a meeting of the Local Council of Nasz Dom (Our Home) in Pruszków (with the participation of Maria Falska), which was created in 1919 for Polish working class children. It was organized by Janusz Korczak (Henryk Goldszmit) and Maria Falska, following the example of the Dom Sierot (Orphans' Home) already operating in Warsaw. One of the most important elements of the organisation of both institutions was the children's self-government, which made these homes unique. One of the educators at the Dom Sierot (Orphans' Home) and aspiring writer Adam M. Mazurek (1907–1944) (Abram M. Mazurok), a law student at the University of Warsaw, was impressed by the modern, self-governing and effective organization of the institution on Krochmalna Street and he devoted his three-volume novel for children, “Rosną Ludzie” ("People Grow"), to the idea of self-governance. The book published in 1938, which showed how to introduce self-government to a home, camp or backyard environment, was popular among young people, although there were also less flattering voices. According to critics, some parents never understood that some family decisions can be made together with their children. The author consciously directed the book to the young reader. "I dedicated the novel," he wrote, "to those who will be parents themselves in 15-20 years. Yes, for children and young people, because the future depends on you. You yearn with all your soul for a better, more cheerful life. That is why I did not follow the advice of a serious publishing house to edit my novel differently, because family self-government is a topic for adults. I purposely took the trouble to write a novel for children so that when they grew up, they would change many things for the better.’ The author of the description: Magdalena Pęzińska Material: photographic paper; Origin: Pruszków; Technique: photographic techniques; Dimensions: the work: height 6 cm, width 8.5 cm.
