Collection Żydowski Instytut Historyczny
Description a) This document is a speech given by a former student of the Orphanage for children on the opening of a new site in November 1940. The boarding house had been forced to move from its former home at No 92 Krochmalna Street which was outside the Ghetto limits, to the Ghetto at No.33 Chlodna Street. This was also the time when Janusz Korczak was arrested by Nazis for not wearing the compulsory armband with the Star of David. Hence the document features numerous mentions of Korczak's absence from the institute. It goes on to include recollections from the time of World War One, when the author was residing at the Orphanage. The speech ends with expressions of hope that the residents of the new Orphanage would live in decent conditions. The document mentions Janusz Korczak, as well as: Stefa [Wilczyńska], the Orphanage director, Hary [Hersz Kaliszer], Rózia [Lipiec-Jakubowska?] and [Róża] Azrylewicz-Sztokmanowa. The speech text was probably printed in the Orphanage newspaper, read out each week to the residents and staff. The son of the author, Oleś, was residing at the Orphanage in September 1939. b) Essay written by one of the Orphanage residents on the subject of the return of Janusz Korczak to the institution following a period of imprisonment.
