Description | The first volume of a three-part publication dealing with questions of children's rights in the context of Janusz Korczak's pedagogical philosophy and practice. This post-conference publication containing texts sent for the III Congress of Children's Rights and VIII International Korczak Conference, which took place simultaneously between 13-16 September 2017 at the POLIN Museum of the History of Polish Jews in Warsaw. More than 800 participants took part in the event, including 120 persons from outside of Poland. The publication was made available in two languages: Polish and English – in two separate parts. The authors of the first part, titled Children's Rights to Having Rights, were: Bogusław Śliwerski, Stanisław Leszek Stadniczeńko, Małgorzata Turczyk, Justyna Kusztal, Manfred Liebel, Magdalena Arczewska, Moshe Shner, Daniel S.Halpérin and Jerzy Smoleń. The articles included in this part of the publication present the following perspectives: pedagogical, legal, sociological, philosophical, medical and psychological. All texts advocate the need for children and adults to know more about children's rights and laws protecting these. In addition, it was stressed that only a change of mentality and the way the world of adults functions will increase respect for children's rights. The authors of the second volume titled Korczak Inspirations – Between Theory and Practice include: Sara Efrat Efron, Dorota Kubicka, Cecile Remy, Sara Hauptman, Basia Vucic, Michal Sadan and Batya Brutin. The articles included in this part of the publication present: pedagogical, philosophical, literary studies and fine arts perspectives. They all stress the need to carry on a dialogue on the subject of children's education between theorists and those involved in delivery. The introduction was written by Marta Santos Pais, the Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General on Violence against Children and Marek Michalak, the Representative for Children's Rights in Poland at the time. The text written by Marta Santos Pais deals with the issue of children's right to a life free of violence. The text written by Marek Michalak shows the way in which Korczak's pedagogical approach inspired his work. |
