Stefania Wilczyńska with a group of pupils in front of the Dom Sierot (Orphans' Home)
Collection | Muzeum Warszawy |
Description | The photo shows a group of children from the Dom Sierot (Orphans' Home) and Stefania Wilczyńska, the main carer and manager of the boarding house, in front of the entrance to the premises on 92 Krochmalna Street. Stefania Wilczyńska was a talented teacher of the youth who lived in Dormitory and gained educational experience by doing internships at the Dom Sierot (Orphans' Home). One of the students was Róża Sternkacówna, a student at the University of Warsaw (1907–1935). Her work book, monitored by Wilczyńska, is one of the few that have survived. The tutor was interested in every detail of the behavior of the children under the care of the apprentice, but also in her "well-being". At the beginning of September 1933, Sternkacówna meticulously noted in her notebook: the behavior of children, her ways of coping with pedagogical problems, reports on the activities conducted for the pupils and numerous plans for the next ones. Under her notes there was this annotation, "Ms. Stefa": "Aren't you taking on too much work, Róźka?". The notebooks of Róża Sternkacówna's work have survived because after her death in 1935 they were sent to her sister Dora, who emigrated to Palestine. They are currently stored in the Israeli archives of Lohamei HaGeta'ot.
