| Description | "Jak kochać dziecko" is a book in four parts: "Dziecko w rodzinie" (first edition 1918, dated 1919), "Internat", "Kolonie letnie" & "Dom Sierot" (first published in 1920). The tetralogy How To Love Children is the summary of various experiences Korczak had in the first two decades of the 20th century. Boarding House is mostly aimed at young tutors, containing Korczak's experiences as the director of the House of Orphans. In it, he shares his thoughts on the way children's groups and societies function, as well the their carers in the boarding house environment. Yet, this is a starting point for him to then explore more universal ideas, such as the ways of organising how children and their tutors can work together in ways which ensure their rights are respected, both as individuals and groups, where the pedagogues involved act as leaders and mentors. According to Korczak, this is the ideal we should be striving towards when managing the functioning of such institutions. He is however aware that this is an ideal which is impossible to achieve. In short, numbered sections Korczak shows how certain behaviours and problems appear to children from their perspective, and then from that of their carers and tutors. Korczak smoothly moves from theoretical to practical advice on methods of teaching young pupils, and then back again. It is this book which provides us with one of the most famous quotes from Korczak: “No such thing as children – only people”. In Summer Camp Korczak focuses on experiences gained when he was working as a tutor and guardian during outings during summer holidays with the poorest Jewish and Polish children. He worked at three such summer camps: in 1904, 1907 and 1908. Summer Camp adds to previously penned books for children: : "Mośki, Joski i Srule" (1910) and "Józki, Jaśki i Frank" (1911). The literary form Korczak chose for Summer Camp is similar to Boarding House: in short, numbered fragments Korczak smoothly moves from recollections, observations and thoughts to offering up theoretical suggestions. In Summer Camp at first Korczak describes his failures as a pedagogue, in order to then move on to his successes. The latter were achieved by Korczak realising where he had been going wrong and correcting the mistakes made. This particular edition is based on that from 1920, in which the whole publication was titled "Jak kochać dzieci" and was divided into three volumes: "Dziecko w rodzinie", "Internat" along with "Kolonie letnie" and "Dom Sierot". |
