Sława : opowieść
Collection | Biblioteka Narodowa |
Description | This book tells the story of the family of a protagonist called Władek, along with that of his friends. The protagonists represent a proletariat. Their living conditions are dramatic. Władek's father is forced to look for new work every few months, in order to support his family. Their living conditions lead to the illness and death of Władek's siblings. Neither his parents nor their friends can afford to send their children to school. And yet they want to learn and develop. They create the Order of the Knights of Honour, in order to care for and develop ethical morals and to protect the weak. The Knights of Honour, even though they are poor, believe that by helping others they will achieve fame. They dream of one day becoming famous leaders, poets, doctors. In the future, however, they become a trade union leader, a seamstress who publishes her journal and a hospital orderly, struggling to support the patients they are charged with looking after. And in this way they achieve success. The novel ends with an appeal to children to believe and try to find fame in their futures. Their efforts will mean that in a certain way their dreams will come true. The community Korczak presents in Sława is one he met in real life while working at summer camps, in a Jewish children's hospital and during private medical home visits, and then eventually in the Orphanage. The book was influenced by revolutionary events taking place between 1905-1907 and his socialist leanings of the time. Sława was first published in December 1912, though it is dated 1913. it would be reissued for times during his lifetime, in 1925, 1935, 1937 and 1939. In 1927, it was adapted for the stage. It was also reissued in the 1940s, and the last time it was independently issued was 1958. |
