Janusz Korczak (Henryk Goldszmit) with teachers at the Ein Harod kibbutz
Collection | Muzeum Warszawy |
Description | Janusz Korczak (Henryk Goldszmit) stands in the middle, among the teachers of the kibbutz school in Ein Harod, Palestine. These include Mosze Karmi - head of the school, Dawid Szyfroni and Szoszana Częstochowska, with whom Korczak especially became friends. The kibbutz was founded in 1921 in northern Palestine, in the Harod Valley, by Jewish settlers from Eastern Europe. It was the first large commune. Despite very difficult beginnings (malaria raged on the drained marshy terrain) in the 1930s it functioned as a model community facility. It was there that many of Korczak's young friends and former pupils, who decided to emigrate from Poland to Palestine, decided to settle down. He himself in the 1930s, already deeply interested in the Jewish national revival, the Zionist movement and the kibbutz experiment, went to Palestine twice, in 1934 and 1936. He also planned further trips, but they never came to fruition.
