Collection | Muzeum Warszawy |
Description | The photo shows Janusz Korczak (Henryk Goldszmit) surrounded by children during summer camp at the 'Różyczka', branch of the Dom Sierot (Orphans' Home) in Wawer. Next to Korczak is Sabina Lejzerowicz (? - 1942), who manages the sewing room of the Dom Sierot (Orphans' Home), and "Pan Misza", i.e. Mojsiej Wajserman (Wasserman, and since World War II Michał Wróblewski, 1911-1993), a longtime tutor at the Dom Sierot (Orphans' Home) ( until 1942). First, he took care of children as an educator, then he got a job there with a monthly salary of PLN 75. At that time, he started studies at the University of Warsaw and the H. Wawelberg and S. Rotwand Engineering School, but eventually graduated from the Free Polish University. The Dom Sierot (Orphans' Home) was for him, as he later recalled, at the same time a home and a "university". In 1945, when he arrived in Warsaw as a soldier of the 1st Polish Army, he directed his first steps there, on 92 Krochmalna Street. The "White House" was badly damaged, but it was the only tenement house in the vicinity that could be rebuilt. After the war, he was a co-founder of the Janusz Korczak’s Memorial Commemoration Committee. He tried to make the building a home for children again, continuing the Korczak's educational model. The Stalinist period, however, was not conducive to spreading the legacy of "Mr. Doctor". Janusz Korczak Orphanage No. 2, which still exists today, was opened on 92 Krochmalna Street (now 6 Jaktorowska Street) two years after the "October thaw", in 1958, thanks to the efforts of Michał Wróblewski (Misha Wasserman).
