Janusz Korczak’s (Henryk Goldszmit) glasses
Collection | Muzeum Warszawy |
Description | The glasses are a valuable artifact, the only surviving personal item belonging to Janusz Korczak (Henryk Goldszmit). The writer was nearsighted and probably had astigmatism. It is not known exactly since when he wore glasses - in the early photos of "Mr. Doctor" we see him without them. During World War I, in 1917, he was hospitalized due to eye disease, so perhaps from its end, and certainly from the early 1920s, he had to use lenses. "My eyes are sensitive," he wrote in a letter of August 2, 1939. The story of how the glasses were saved is also undocumented. They were probably found by the educator of the Dom Sierot (Orphans’ Home) Mojsiej (Misza) Wasserman (Michał Wróblewski) in the building of orphanage in the ghetto after its inhabitants marched on the evening of August 5, 1942. Probably glasses were saved with two folders with various text materials. The author of the text: Magdalena Pęzińska Material: glass, metal, imitation of leather; Origin: Warsaw (?); Technique: optical product; Dimensions: the work: height 4 cm, width 11.5 cm, depth 3 cm. |
