Dziecko salonu

Description | This novel tells the story of a twenty-something man from a wealthy, bourgeois family who is looking for meaning in his life. Its protagonist does not feel accepted by his family. This is why he attempts to secure independence from it, moving out of his home and working as a private tutor. He witnesses the poverty many people suffer, leading him to perceive the world as unfair and unjust – something he feels he is unable to change. He looks for escape in alcohol and the services of prostitutes, none of which soothe his spirits. "Dziecko salonu" is the second novel written by Janusz Korczak. Its title is a reference to his previous novel "Dzieci ulicy". The writer believed that personal happiness is not related to how much wealth one's family has. "Dziecko salonu", much like his later novel titled "Spowiedź motyla", is probably based on a journal Korczak kept himself. Some facts relating to the novel's protagonist – also called Janusz – overlap with Korczak's own experiences, such as working as a private tutor, medical assistance given to poorest folks and experience of suicidal thoughts. In 1904, the book was serialised in a magazine called “Głos”, and in 1906 it is likely they were published as two book format novels. No copies of the earlier edition survive at present. The subsequent edition is dated 1907. Another edition was published during Korczak's life in 1927. During the period between the two World Wars, fragments of the book were included in school textbooks. |
