| Description | The book "Mośki, Joski i Srule" was published in Yiddish first as a fragment, titled "In dorf Michajlowka". A year later, a complete translation by Jehoszua Perle titled Mojšelekh, Joselekh, Sruliklekh was published. Aimed at young readers, the books is a unique sort of reportage from summer camps arranged for Jewish children. In 1908, Korczak took part in these camps as a tutor between 1904 and 1907. The Association of Summer Camps (Towarzystwo Kolonii Letnich) organised these outings for the poorest Polish and Jewish children. The text relates how these holiday camps were run, from the time of departure to when children returned to Warsaw. Descriptions of events are interwoven with records of reflections and the narrator's impressions. The author also allows the children to speak. This includes descriptions of how children there spent their days, such as how games were played and organised, e.g. friendship courts. The camps were located in a centre called Michałówka, in a town called Daniłowo-Błędnica, a dozen kilometres north of Treblinka. "Mośki, Joski i Srule" was followed by followed by "Józki, Jaśki i Franki", an analogous description of similar summer camps for Christian children. Both books mark Korczak's debut as a writer of books for children. Both books were first printed in parts in a children's journal called Promyk. |
