The postcard from Janusz Korczak to Stanisław Żemis
Collection | Muzeum Niepodległości |
Description | The front of this postcard features the coloured image of three girls with a white cat. Two are either saying hello or goodbye. The background features houses, a river and trees. The postcard features a note written in Janusz Korczak's own hand: “Thank you for the greetings Korczak". The reverse features information related to the addressee – Stanisław Żemis. A stamp on the lower right hand side, along with the words “Card from Korczak”. In the upper right hand corner a pencilled date: 1925. The postcard was addressed to Stanisław Żemis (1902-1978), who was a teacher between 1925-1932 closely associated with Nasz Dom (Our Home). Żemis was also active in the Workers Association of Friends of Children and was its president between 1944 -1948. In 1944, he was the president of Siedlce, then in 1944-1945 the director of State Owned Forests. In 1950, he lost his sight, something he had struggled with for years. He then became active in assisting those with eyesight problems, including work with the Polish Association of the Blind. In 2018, he was identified as the author of the most important Holocaust testimony in Łuków, which was his home during WWII. The postcard was sent in gratitude – a traditional function postcards served in Korczak's system of teaching and communicating, used to send thanks from the Orphanage, Our Home and Mały Przegląd. |
