Dzieci ulicy

Collection Biblioteka Narodowa
Description This publication was the debut novel by Janusz Korczak. The main narrative thread is the inner transformation experienced by Antek, the main protagonist of the book. The context is provided by scenes from the poor and crime-ridden streets of Warsaw. The book focuses on children who are left to their own devices, people who are weaker, poor, living on the scrap heap margins of society. At the end of the 19th century and start of the 20th, Korczak was frequently a guest in Warsaw's Old Town and Powisle district. The observations he made at the time inspired him to write this novel. Originally, in 1901 it was serialised in a magazine titled "Czytelnia dla Wszystkich". In that same year, the novel was published twice in book format. No more editions were issued during Korczak's lifetime.
