| Description | This publication is a collection of satirical dialogues, containing the sorts of short conversations Poles might have conducted in the mid-1920s. The dialogues cover the problems and puzzles the Polish nation was struggling with at the time. The bitter-sweet tone is used to cover topics such as politics, social mores, families and society itself. We hear the voices of unfaithful lovers, dishonest workers, emancipated daughters and independent sons, antisemites and litigants, fashionable wives and prostitutes. Korczak also enters into dialogue with the way in which Poles perceive themselves as a nation: as hermits locked up in an Orphanage. He presents himself as an attentive and sensitive observer of many spheres of social existence. This is the only publication Korczak ensured was dated precisely, informing readers at the end that he wrote it on New Years' Eve of 1925/1926. We do not know, however, if this was another joke, in the style of the rest of the publication. It was only published once during Korczak's lifetime – in 1926. |
